Jobaer Alam joined Dhaka University as a Lecturer in 2008 at the Department of Fisheries. In 2013 he became an Assistant Professor and joined the Department of Oceanography in Dhaka University. He is serving as the Chairman of the Oceanography department for two consecutive terms.

Md. Jobaer Alam assumed the role of Chairman and Acting Editor of The Bangladesh Today, a national English daily in 2013. The Bangladesh Today founded in 2002 re-emerged under his administration as a modern newspaper for the new generation with a vast online presence. The news daily acts as a platform to promote culture, education and dialogue in the young generation.

Jobaer Alam has other involvements through various organizations he founded in the real estate, media, consultancy and international business sectors. He is the Co-ordinator and Treasurer of the World's Largest Sculptor Village named as Barbarism of 1971.
